ECO2: The new unit with carbon dioxide (R744)

Thermocold in collaboration with its agency ideal Team of Dr. Stefano Brussolo, supplied an innovative heat pump system working with natural refrigerant CO2 ( R744 ), installed for the treatment and the industrial cleaning of tanks. The washing and treatment of the tanks is carried out with hot water at about 70°C and with steam at 5 bar depending on the different products to be treated.

The estimated water demand is about 45.000/50.000 liters per day divided in two work shifts from 07.00 to 19.00. The energy renovation of the plant is obtained thanks to the elimination of 4 heat generators with a capacity of 350 kW, and to the replacement of the steam boiler burner of equal power fueled by LPG.

For the hot water production serving the treatment and washing plant, ECO2 160 SAC units by Thermocold have been selected, with approximately 60kW of heating capacity. The units are connected to 4 stainless steel storage tanks with thermal stratification, each one of 1000 lt capacity, all connected in parallel. The 4 storage tanks are fed with softened water at 12/14°C which is then increased by the heat pumps up to 70/75°C. An additional storage tank of 3000lt capacity connected to the 4 small tanks has been installed in the thermal plant serving the steam boiler and the shell and tube heat exchangers. The hot water taken from the upper part of each layered tank is stored into the central tank and then it is delivered to the steam boiler, the spears and the high pressure water pumps. If the desired temperature is reached, the pumps and the spears take the hot water from the main central tank, otherwise the temperature increase is managed by the steam boiler through rthe heat exchangers.

The plant is also equipped with an accounting system for heat and energy, remotely managed and monitored by Thermocold, in order to verify in real time the unit operation and to store the working parameters every 5 seconds. The system allows to feed the heat generators with heated water from 55 °C to 75 °C , leading to the following results :

  • Complete Elimination of  SO3 (sulfur trioxide)
  • Elimination of 80% NOx  (nitrogen oxides and their mixtures)
  • Reduction of 300 Tons CO2 (carbon dioxide)
  • High cost savings
  • Reduction of operating costs of diesel generators
  • Access to TEE ( 50TEP ), and to claims of CO2 ( traded on EEX )

ECO2 Thermocold

ECO2 has been specifically created to combine the sanitary hot water production demand and the increasing sensitivity towards minor energetic consumptions and CO2 emission reductions, pursuant the energetic global challenges and the EU guidelines. The heat pumps system, together with the utilization of CO2 as a natural refrigerant, allows the achievement of high efficiency levels (extremely high COP in a range of 4.5 in the production of sanitary hot water) and outlet water temperatures (up to 90°C) impossible to be reached with the standard technologies available on the market.

In comparison with the most recent condensing boiler, ECO2 works with substantially higher energetic performances, that is what makes it the only technology able to completely and efficiently substitute boilers. The undisputed benefits resulting from the utilization of this technology combined with a sensitive cost reduction, in terms of maintenance and assistance, are the added value of ECO2 which makes it the perfect solution, meant to satisfy various application from the residential to the commercial and the industrial ones (industrial processes for drying, washing, steam production, raw materials processing, food and agri-food sectors, industrial laundries and chemical industries) with the demand of high outlet water temperatures.
